Ovan Hellgate: Scholar and Gentleman

Post by Ovan Hellgate »

Name: Ovan Hellgate

Tribe: Horus Hellgate

Pillars:
Central: Heart of gold that bleeds for humanity
Contrast: Has always been too perceptive for his own good
Crossing: Fenri, Diamond Dust
Active: Searching for the strength to fell a Leviathan.

Anthem: Crystal Conjures - Allows them to manipulate crystals to create tools, weapons, and structures with unique properties, and at its pinnacle, to forge Hadalstone—a solid manifestation of their naten.

Traits:

Fathom Sight - Horus Hellgates possess vision far beyond what we call the electromagnetic spectrum. Their unfathomable sight has given them perception of energies and entities on the Unseen and all the special frequencies that bind them.

Spirit Alchemist: Ovan has undertaken an extensive study of the alchemic arts, developing process and tools only he can produce with his unique acuity and Anthem. Because of this, he commands a wealth of respect in the scientific community all across Vescrutia. From astronomy to geology, both in the Seen and Unseen and all the disciplines in-between, Ovan has offered a hand in crafting tools and techniques that have caused paradigm shifts in their respective arenas. Ovan works with the transmutation of matter to matter, energy to energy, in accordance with the natural order.

Shamanic Rites: Their access to energies and applications of the Unseen realm have cemented them as the clan that handles the passage of Hellgates from one world to the next. They have special rituals and tools with which they "cleanse" the bodies and souls of the Hellgates before they are conferred to death and pass on.

Birthrune: Varien - Undiscovered

Curse of Uncertainty: Ovan's nature is that of an explorer and learner, always grateful for the next experience to broaden his horizons. His pragmatic nature and relative celebrity status haunts him with the spirit of a spiteful entity. For almost as long as he can remember traveling, this feeling of unease followed him, no matter how otherwise well he felt, and the feeling ebbs and flows, growing magnitudes more powerful when he is the center of praise and adoration he is likely to receive.

Faction: Horus Hellgate - The Horus are a family different from many of the other branches of the Hellgate in their distaste for violence. They pride themselves on their destructive strength last and their uncanny insight first and foremost. Among the Hellgate, the Horus intuition reigns supreme, bordering on prophetic through the creation and mastery of instruments and traits they use to carry out their study. The Horus are gifted with sight beyond sight, vision of entities and energies deeper than other Human tribes and as such are tasked with the conferment of the dead and funeral rites for the Hellgate Clan. Their abilities allow their insight to transcend just superstition or faith, shedding light on an ever expanding world gone mostly Unseen by much of Vescrutia.

Arbiters:

Ovan blinks so he can focus his intent, priming his focus on the wavelength designated

Mudra of Separation

This mudra is sacred to the Horus, channeling the energy they use to work with their brethren and ferrying them to the other side.

Scrying Blade
Cea Class
Type: Shamanic Rites
Prep: Mudra of Separation
A technique that affects things within the Unseen without causing damage to the physical plane. Like an ethereal scalpel, Ovan can carve fissures between the unseen and the seen, severing connections between the Seen and Unseen

Bio: Ovan Hellgate was a strange youngling with s a special kind of wonder hidden behind his eyes. He was the youngest of his siblings, the youngest of his peers, and generally smaller than other children his age. Always trying to keep up with his crew, he strained himself to match the other kids physically, falling short in most of the games and sports they played. In a typical Hellgate fashion, they ridiculed him for his shortcomings in ways that he always fought to understand. Though he couldn't keep up as well with his peers physical strengths, he far outmatched them in his visual prowess, something they seemed to overlook when judging him for his apparent failings. While they were honing their skills in Crystal Conjures, making toys and trinkets to trade and play with one another, Ovan could see right through them with his Fathom Sight.

In his early years, he didn't know what to make of his sight, whenever he described it to his parents they shirked his inquisition off as precocious banter. As he grew older, he began to make sense of the hearts of the people around him and really understand what he could perceive in and around his community. Though the Horus were gifted with a deeper sight into the Unseen, Ovan had a special gift to see directly into people's hearts and into their true nature, gleaning details about them deeper than they could reveal themselves with just a glance. He learned to speak freely of his insights, responding to the ridicule of his small stature with retorts questioning the insecurities of those who mocked him. As he grew and learned the intricacies of crystal conjures, he cared less and less to collaborate with the likes of those who mocked him in his younger days, choosing to focus more on his own studies rather than fall into the competitive nature of Hellgate society.

He turned his sights to the world above, able to view the cosmic procession of celestial bodies with an intuitive, almost precognitive accuracy. He recorded the patterns in a journal he always kept by his side, ready to update it with new insights on a moment's notice, dropping whatever layman task or conversation at hand to add a layer to his star atlas. By the Hellgate age of 50, Ovan had written and rewritten his journal over 100 times, crafting sequentially more precise and detailed charts every time. His starry eyed passion for charting the stars, the consecration of a dance more grand and powerful than himself, set him in a world apart from the rest of the tribe as they all embarked on their Quest of Maturity.

Ovan fell into a world of his own, engrossed by the underlying secrets hidden deep within the cosmos. What he lacked in a natural affinity to conjure and manipulate crystals, he made up for by leveraging his visual prowess in the confines of his own atelier. He taught himself to use his Anthem to craft special instruments that allowed him to take measurements of the celestial dance with an otherworldly accuracy, taking each edition of his journal to magnitudes of greater depth with each edition.

One night in his atelier, far away from the tribe atop a mesa in Arcix Solara where the nights became a sea of stars, bathed in the light of the night, Ovan adopted his Quest of Maturity for himself. In a moment of clarity, he felt himself connected to everything, Seen and Unseen. Until then, Ovan had been outcast by the tribe and missed many of the greater teachings on their funeral rites, but gleaned his own understanding all by himself. That realization gave him the resolve to depart the mesa, the Acrix, and share his gift with the world on his Quest of Maturity.

Ovan took to the world with a cloak, his instruments, and his then complete version of his journal, the Uranometria, and began his pilgrimage to a place where he could truly be valued for his gifts. He found his way from Acrix to observatories and ateliers all across Vescrutia, sharing his journal with the scholars at each school of academia and cementing himself as a expert resource when it came to assessing the cosmos. His handmade instruments left each faculty with tools that transformed their understanding of their own studies and he played a hand in developing groundbreaking tools unique to the cosmological conditions in each location. His tools and insight granted him an honorary member of Diamond Dust, highlighting his visual prowess and academic contributions as a service to the world at large.

The stories of the odd Ovan reaching global respect as a scholar reached the sandy edges of Acrix Solara again and he was invited to return back to his homeland to compete in the Crown Jewel Ceremony to succeed the Horus Crown and lead the tribe in the next generation. He begrudgingly accepted, knowing he was only called because they realized the value he could bring to the reputation of the tribe. Against his own better judgment, but more to show his family the hubris of their treatment of him, he went back home to weather the trials of the crowns who came before him. His journey across the continents of Vescrutia prepared him better than he thought for the contests that awaited him and he used his cunning to survive Thassigur's Maze and Rhugris's Gamble without the raw destructive power of his brethren.

Unfortunately, before his succession ceremony, he was deeply humbled by the previous Crown, Sorin. Sorin explained to Ovan that though his insight, sensibility, and resourcefulness brought him victory, without a claim to power, he would fail as Crown and lead the tribe to oblivion. Squarely defeated, Ovan left with his mission and a new chapter to explore on his Quest of Maturity, finding his own power in a world where it hadn't served him before. The only place he knew to turn was back to Diamond Dust to truly understand the nature of Tinjutsu and unlock his personal power.

There, he met a traveler from far away named Okoye and agreed to a skill swap, she would help him unlock his personal power in exchange for helping her track down an Unseen threat to add to her arsenal. Now, he trains to understand what the strength to lead looks like through his unique lens.

Instruments and Items

Severwing - Ascendant Instrument:
A large boomerang almost as tall as Ovan is. Crafted from special weapons forged by the Aurorai on Borealis Peak meant to fell an Azure Beast and the Horus Hellgate unique crystal conjured, Hadalstone. Ovan was able to create this tool in battle against the Leviathan with his bear hands.

The weapons that came together to create the core of the instrument would normally be far too heavy for Ovan to lift by himself, let alone swing with a single arm. The Hadalstone coating most of the weapon’s body makes it light as a feather for him, but carries enough weight to crack bedrock when it touches the ground. Ovan can channel Naten through Severwing and toss it as far as he can see, with the ability to recall it to his hand from just about anywhere.
